Fishing for Mackerel in North Norfolk. Whilst staying at Kelling Heath I had the change to head out and spend some time on the beach fishing for Mackerel.
Kelling Heath is a wonderful campsite, set in the beautiful heathland and woods of North Norfolk.
Kelling Heath offers you the chance to stay in a lodge, static caravan or bring your own caravan, campervan or tent.
The nearest beach to Kelling Heath is Weybourne which is a downhill bike ride taking around 10 minutes. Unfortunately up hill on the way back!
I’ve fished for Mackerel previously but only of boats. We don’t really get a run of Mackerel in Suffolk (saying that i’ve never tried to fish for them here).
I had arranged to meet up with RJ Outdoors. He’sthe man who knows the coast and has fished for Mackerel previously of this beach.
I packed my bag, leaving the family sleeping so that we could catch the early morning tide. As I say its only 10 minutes on a push bike down to the beach. Taking you through the forest, over the North Norfolk Steam Railway and through Weybourne down to the beach.
Packing a day bag with the X5 Max by rigged and ready, a bait runner loaded with heavy braid and a few packets of feathers, I put my feet on the pedals and made my way down to meet Rob.
Gear required:
A pack of feathers will cost £3.00, I was using a 2oz lead and the X5 Max Rod with the smaller, thicker tip.
So the Session with Rob didn’t put any fish on the beach but I wasn’t going to give up.
Fishing for mackerel in North Norfolk isn’t guaranteed to put fish on the beach, They are either there in numbers or not there at all!
The following we headed down with a friend and my youngest and finally caught.
It was great to see my youngest pull in 3 Mackerel. When there’s 3 fish on your trace they give a really good fight.
You can go session after session and not catch, but as I said when they are there, they are there in numbers.
The best time to fish for Mackerel of the beach is the middle of the summer when you have had a week of really good hot weather and not too much movement in the sea.
So with a small amount of gear you can spend a day on the beach fishing for mackerel.
Mackerel feathering is not a sport that you will have to spend loads on.
If you have a travel rod like the X5 Max by Rigged and Ready, you won’t need to invest in a new rod.
The X5 Max is a fairly hardcore rod, it is designed for loads of different types of fishing: from lure fishing, fly fishing, bait fishing and here Mackerel feathering.
Here’s a video of me using the X5 Max earlier this year for some Pike and Perch fishing.
