I never thought I would be saying this but I really liked these vegan outdoor meals.
In a previous post I mentioned that Real Turmat have produced some Vegan outdoor meals so it was time to head out and give one a try.
Vegan Outdoor meals / Pasta in Tomato Sauce.
The pouch itself is a standard Real turmat pouch, vacuum packed and weighing 127g.
It has the same re-hydrating process as the rest of their meals so its only a case of heating some water.
Recently most of my trips / excursions have seen me use a 100g gas can, pocket stove and a small 75ml titanium cup.
So this time i decided to break out one of my favourite cookers the Swiss Army Volcano stove.
I have a large collection of cookers.
They all have to plus point and negative points (as mentioned in this post)
But this stove is so versatile and is fairly lightweight as well.
It is mainly used for natural fuel but I have used it before with Hexamine blocks. Anyway I digress…
Opening up the Vegan Outdoor meal and given the packet a shake (to loosen up the food after vacuum packing). You can see small vermicelli pasta and pieces of Soya along with the dehydrated tomato sauce.
The ingredients of the meal are as follows:
Pasta (durum wheat) (35%), soy protein (soy (98%), salt, chili) (21%), onion (13%), wheat flour, rapeseed oil, tomato paste (7%), vegetable bouillon (salt, glucose syrup, yeast extract, onion, modified starch, maltodextrin, vegetable concentrate, seasoning, sugar, vinegar extract), sugar, seasoning, soy sauce (soy, salt, vinegar), tabasco (vinegar, chili, salt), antioxidant (ascorbic acid).
Nutrition Per Pack
Energy 540kcal, Protein 27g, Carbohydrates 64g, Sugar 6.7g, Fat 15g, Saturated Fat 1.1g, Salt 2.7g
Re-hydrating the meal with the water I had boiled and giving it a good stir (I can’t re-iterate the need to make sure these meals have been stirred well as a dry corner that hasn’t re-hydrated isn’t that appealing).
The meal is then left for 8 minutes to fully re-hydrate. Now in a cold environment your meal can get cold before fully re-hydrated. Hence the reason for making a pouch cosy (see video below).
Once re-hydrated it was time to dig in and I must say if you had given me a meal with dehydrated meat in it I wouldn’t have noticed the difference.
Now Vegan, whether through choice or dietary requirements the outdoor market really does lack vegan outdoor meals. Real Turmat have taken all of this on-board and created some great products.
This vegan outdoor meal I would definitely eat again and with their snacks by Real On The Go you have a full arsenal of fuel for your high energy pursuits.
