Flameless Heater by Adventure Menu. Heat up your food without a stove.
Flameless heaters have been on the market for years, with various militaries using similar products for there MRE meals.
This system is a great way to heat up either MRE meals or your freeze dried hiking meals.
Having a Self Heating system means that you don’t need to carry a camping stove, is a lightweight option, can be used inside the tent and not effected by bad weather.
Recently, Basecamp Food sent me this flameless heater system by Adventure Menu.
Adventure Menu are based in the Czech republic and produce a great range of MRE and freeze dried meals. Most of them are available in the UK from Basecamp Food.
The flameless heater kit basically comprises of a re-useable plastic bag and a heat pad that is activated with water.
As mentioned the bag is re-useable and can by used to heat to meals. it takes about 10 minutes to heat two meals.
How to use the Flameless Heater by Adventure Menu.
Using the self heating system is really easy and all you really need is 150ml of water.
- Open the heat pad bag, remove the heat pad and place in the large bag.
- Using the bag the heat pad came in, measure 150ml of water to the fill line.
- Empty water into large bag.
- The heat pad will activate with the water and start producing steam.
- place your un-opened MRE meal into bag. (if your wanting to heat a freeze dried meal than open, add correct amount of cold water, re-seal and put into heat bag.
- Wait 10 minutes.
As mentioned this heat system is capable of heating 2 meals. I also found that once heated the heat bag holds a lot of residual heat so is great to put in your sleeping bag prior to jumping in it (make sure it is well sealed and the steam hole is facing up.
Currently these flameless heaters are not available from Basecamp Food as these where just a test sample but they can be purchased direct from Adventure Menu. either as singles or a pack of five.
In my opinion these are a great way to heat your food. Only downside is that with freeze dried meals you have the possibility of having enough hot water for a hot drink.
